James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
If you have James Hardie backer board or siding that ties into a bathroom and something has failed behind the tile or along the exterior wall, you need a real fix, not a patch. A full James Hardie bathroom remodel in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on the size of the wet area, what has to be torn out, and whether any framing or subfloor repair is needed. Most owners discover the problem the same way: grout cracking in a straight line, a soft spot underfoot near the tub, or moisture staining on the drywall where the bathroom meets an exterior Hardie plank wall.
We’re Mason Remodeling Co Fort Lauderdale, an independent service provider, not affiliated with James Hardie Corporation. What we do is match the right James Hardie product to the job, install it correctly, and put a written price in your hand before the first tool comes off the truck. Isaac Pruett runs our Fort Lauderdale operation, and he’s spent the better part of two decades pulling apart South Florida bathrooms to see exactly how water finds its way in.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

In bathrooms, James Hardie products fall into two worlds: HardieBacker cement board (the 1/4″ and 1/2″ panels used as tile substrate in showers and tub surrounds) and HardiePlank or HardiePanel siding that forms the exterior wall against which many Fort Lauderdale bathrooms are built. The gotcha that trips up a lot of homeowners: HardieBacker is not waterproof. It is water-resistant, but it will wick moisture. The waterproofing layer is a separate step, usually a liquid membrane or sheet membrane applied over the board before tile goes up. In older Fort Lauderdale homes, especially 1970s and 1980s construction in neighborhoods like Victoria Park or Sailboat Bend, we regularly find HardieBacker installed directly behind tile with no membrane at all. That wall eventually fails from the inside out.
If your bathroom exterior uses HardiePlank lap siding, the relevant spec is the 6-1/4″ exposure for traditional lap or the 4″ exposure for select Cedarmill. HardiePanel vertical siding shows up more on mid-century ranches and some 1950s concrete-block homes that were re-sided. OEM James Hardie products are our default recommendation for anything structural or water-facing. For trim and non-structural pieces, quality aftermarket options exist, but we will always tell you the trade-off before you decide. This is the same standard we apply when a kitchen remodel involves KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria tops, or Silestone surfaces: match the material to what it actually has to do.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Straight-line cracks in the tile or grout. Unlike random spider cracks, a straight vertical or horizontal crack usually means the backer board seams were not taped and mudded, or the board was not properly fastened. The seam moves, and the tile above it cracks along that line.
- Soft spots on the bathroom floor near the tub or shower. Water has been getting under the tile and soaking the subfloor. By the time you can feel a soft spot, the plywood or OSB underneath is already compromised, and the repair is beyond a regrout.
- Efflorescence, which looks like white chalk, on the exterior HardiePlank beneath the bathroom window. That white powder means water is moving through the wall cavity from inside the bathroom to outside the house. The wall is breathing moisture, and that is a flashing or waterproofing failure.
- Mold smell that returns within days of cleaning. Mold is not the problem; moisture is the problem. If the smell comes back after you scrub the grout, water is sitting inside the wall cavity, and the HardieBacker is holding it like a sponge.
- Caulk that keeps separating from the tub or shower pan. Caulk pulls away when the surface behind it is moving. HardieBacker installed over framing that was never checked for flatness will flex slightly with every step in the tub, and the caulk joint loses its bond.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A James Hardie bathroom remodel in Fort Lauderdale lands between $9,000 and $28,000 in our current market. The spread is wide because the job varies enormously. A small guest bath where the HardieBacker behind the shower surround needs replacement and re-tile runs closer to $9,000. A master bathroom that requires full tear-out of the wet area, new HardieBacker, a proper waterproofing membrane, new plumbing rough-in, and 48″ x 48″ large-format tile can push toward $28,000. What drives the range: the square footage of the wet area, whether the subfloor needs replacement, the tile you choose, and whether we’re reworking the shower pan.
Every Mason Remodeling Co Fort Lauderdale estimate is a written, line-item price delivered before work starts. Not a verbal number, not a range we refine later. The price we quote is the price you pay, unless something hidden turns up behind the wall, and when that happens, we tell you what we found, what it takes to fix it, and what it will cost, before we touch a thing. Every completed project is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the work is not right within a year of completion, we come back and make it right at no cost to you.

There are things you can safely check yourself. Look at the grout lines with a flashlight. Run your hand along the tile and feel for lippage, which is when one tile edge sits higher than the one next to it. Check the exterior HardiePlank around your bathroom window for paint bubbling or soft spots at the butt joints. Those observations help you understand the scope before anyone gives you a price.
What you should not do is pull tile off a shower wall to “have a look.” The moment you expose the backer board, you have an open water source in your house until the wall is rebuilt. If the board is the problem, you are now halfway into a remodel with no waterproofing and no plan. This is also not a job where any mistake is cosmetic. Seams that are not properly taped, fasteners that are over-driven through the board surface, or a waterproofing membrane applied at the wrong thickness will fail inside of two years, and you’ll be paying for the same job twice. Call us at (754) 354-3720. We’ll look at what you have, tell you straight what it needs, and put it in writing.
FAQs

A properly installed HardieBacker shower with a correct waterproofing membrane and quality tile work should last 30 to 50 years in Fort Lauderdale’s humid climate, but the tile and grout will need periodic resealing every 2 to 5 years. The weak link in South Florida is almost never the HardieBacker itself; it’s the waterproofing step that gets skipped. Call (754) 354-3720 and we’ll tell you whether yours was done right.
No, not in any way that lasts. HardieBacker is a cementitious board, and once moisture has compromised the seams or the tile bond has failed, spot repairs just move the failure point to the next seam. The wall has to be opened, the board inspected, and the wet area rebuilt. We’ll give you an exact price before we touch it; estimates are free.
Most full wet-area remodels in Fort Lauderdale take 10 to 18 working days from demo to final grout and caulk. A small shower surround where we’re only replacing the backer board and re-tiling can be done in 5 to 7 working days. What slows the job down is drying time between waterproofing layers, and that time is non-negotiable for a wall that will last.
Yes, we stock 1/4″ and 1/2″ HardieBacker, HardiePlank lap siding in standard exposures, and the associated seam tape, fasteners, and sealants on our trucks and in our Fort Lauderdale supply yard. That means we’re not waiting on a supplier to start your job, and we’re not substituting a different brand because we couldn’t get the right board. Call (754) 354-3720 to schedule your free estimate.
