Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
If you have a Therma-Tru product in your kitchen and something is failing, here’s what you need to know: a full Therma-Tru kitchen remodeling project in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on scope. Smaller jobs like cabinet installation or backsplash work fall lower, and we’re happy to give you a written price before any work starts. Most Fort Lauderdale homeowners discover they need us when a Therma-Tru door threshold cracks from years of humidity cycles, or a kitchen entry door starts binding against its frame after a couple of South Florida summers and won’t close cleanly anymore.
We’re Mason Remodeling Co Fort Lauderdale. We’re not affiliated with Therma-Tru, but we work with their products constantly. Isaac Pruett runs our Fort Lauderdale operation, and he’s spent close to twenty years remodels across South Florida, including a long stretch in Victoria Park where those 1950s kitchen doorways were never built for modern Therma-Tru prehung units. We tell you what we found, what it takes to fix it, and what it will cost – before we touch a thing. Call (754) 354-3720 for a free estimate.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru makes a huge range of fiberglass entry doors, and some of the more popular lines show up in Fort Lauderdale kitchens as doorways to the garage, patio, or laundry room. The main series we see in kitchen remodels are the Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star, and Pulse lines. Each has distinct frame dimensions and threshold profiles, so a part from one series rarely drops into another without modification.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Therma-Tru door slabs and frames are machined to match in pairs, and the hinge mortising on a Fiber-Classic is not interchangeable with a Smooth-Star even when both say “36-inch left-hand inswing.” The label on the hinge edge of the slab has the model number, manufacture date, and series printed on it, and that label is what we match against when we order parts. If the label is gone, we measure the slab thickness, the bore spacing on the hinges, and the threshold riser height. For most Fort Lauderdale kitchens, OEM Therma-Tru parts are the right call because they match the original frame profile exactly. Quality aftermarket thresholds and sweeps exist, but we’re careful with them because a slightly wrong sweep angle lets rain and humidity in, and in Fort Lauderdale, humidity is always trying to get in.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- The door sticks at the top corner on the latch side. This usually means the frame has shifted from slab settlement or the original rough opening wasn’t shimmed correctly. It’s common in Fort Lauderdale homes built on sandy soil that moves with every wet-dry season.
- You see daylight under the door or a draft at the threshold. The threshold riser or the sweep underneath has worn flat. South Florida humidity also causes fiberglass thresholds to develop hairline cracks that let ants and moisture through.
- The door swings open or closed on its own. Hinges have loosened from the jamb, or the frame is racked. If you can wiggle the hinge screws with a screwdriver, the screw holes are stripped and the frame needs reinforcement.
- Condensation or mildew at the bottom interior corner. The weatherstripping on the sweep has compressed unevenly, or the corner seal pads are missing. Fort Lauderdale’s morning humidity makes this show up fast once the seal fails.
- The handle or deadbolt grinds instead of turning smoothly. The door has settled and the strike plate no longer aligns with the latch body. Adjusting the strike plate is a temporary fix; correcting the frame alignment is what actually lasts.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full kitchen remodel that incorporates Therma-Tru door replacement, cabinetry, counters, and flooring typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 in Fort Lauderdale. The door portion itself is just one line item in that, and the honest range for swapping a Therma-Tru door unit including slab, frame, threshold, weatherstripping, and labor usually sits between $1,500 and $4,000 depending on whether we’re replacing the whole prehung unit or rebuilding the threshold in place.
Smaller scopes break down like this: cabinet installation runs $4,000 to $13,000, countertops $2,000 to $6,500, backsplash $800 to $2,500, and a kitchen island runs $3,000 to $10,000. Every one of those numbers includes the part, the labor, and the written price before we start. No change orders because we missed something on the estimate. You get a written price on paper, and the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, meaning if something isn’t right within a year of completion, we fix it at no cost to you.

There are a few things you can safely check yourself: tighten any loose hinge screws to see if that helps the binding, sweep the threshold track clear of debris, and check that the weatherstripping is seated in its groove. That’s the safe, sane list. Once you are dealing with a racked frame, a cracked threshold riser, or stripped hinge mortises, you’re into power tools and precision shimming, and that’s where we see homeowners make an expensive situation worse. On a Therma-Tru fiberglass slab, drilling the wrong hinge screw depth can splinter the fiberglass surface and ruin the slab. That’s not a repair anymore, that’s a replacement.
Isaac Pruett has pulled more than one homeowner’s “weekend fix” apart and found a door that now needs new hinges, new foam core repair, and a prayer. If the symptom is more than a loose screw, call (754) 354-3720. The estimate is free. The relief is immediate.
FAQs

A properly installed Therma-Tru door in Fort Lauderdale should last 20 to 30 years, with the frame and threshold being the first components to show wear. The biggest lifespan threat here is not sun or rain; it’s standing water against the threshold during hurricane season. A threshold that stays wet repeatedly will degrade on the underside in about half the time of one that drains properly.
Yes, if the damage is limited to the sweep and the top surface of the threshold. A replacement sweep costs far less than a threshold riser. But if the threshold riser itself is cracked, warped, or has rot underneath, patching it is a waste of money; the material is structural, not cosmetic. We’ll tell you honestly which one you have. Call (754) 354-3720 and we’ll come look before recommending anything.
For a straightforward threshold and sweep replacement, most jobs are done in half a day. Replacing a full prehung unit, including pulling the old frame and re-shimming the rough opening, typically takes the better part of a full day. Kitchens with existing trim that has to be removed and reworked add time. We give you the time estimate in writing along with the price.
We stock the most common Therma-Tru threshold risers, sweeps, weatherstripping, hinge sets, and corner seal pads on our trucks, so when we arrive for the estimate we usually have what we need to fix it that same visit. For a full slab or prehung unit in a specific series and finish, we order from our supplier network and usually have it in hand within three to five business days. Along with Therma-Tru, we also stock and order parts by KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for kitchen projects.
If your Therma-Tru door is wearing out and your kitchen remodel is in the planning stage, start with an estimate. Call (754) 354-3720 and talk to a live person, any hour of any day. We’ll give you a straight answer and a written price before a single tool comes out of the truck.
